About the iPVD Consortium

The risk of subjects developing PH is four to six times higher in developing countries compared to developed regions of the world probably because of infectious diseases. Many infections contribute to PH including schistosomiasis and other Helminthic diseases: viral infections (such as HIV), fungal infections (like Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (paracoccidioidomycosis)), bacterial infections (such as Bordetella pertussis), and probably tuberculosis.

Despite the large prevalence of the infectious etiologies of PH, many knowledge gaps exist in understanding how the infectious agents lead to PVDs, ultimately resulting in a lack of adequate therapies and public education. To address these unmet needs, a group of scientists and physicians met in Canterbury in October 2018 to establish this Consortium (iPVD).

The iPVD Consortium represents a systematic and coherent effort to investigate the role of infection in PH.
