Sri Lanka Task Force
The Sri Lanka Task Force is a regional initiative focused on strengthening the recognition, diagnosis, and management of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in Sri Lanka. They bring together clinicians and key stakeholders to support improvements in patient outcomes through greater recognition of PH and education. It also focuses on the development of structured referral pathways and nationally relevant guidelines tailored to the local healthcare system.
The Task Force’s focus is to:
- establish PH hubs across national and teaching hospitals to strengthen referral networks and access to specialist care
- deliver webinars in complex echocardiography to support early recognition of PH, and develop a prioritisation algorithm to guide referral to right heart catheterisation
- support the development of national PH data to inform service development and facilitate engagement with health authorities and policy stakeholders.
Sri Lanka Takes a Major Step Forward in PH Care with New Joint Clinical Statement
October 2026
We are delighted to highlight the publication of the first Joint Clinical Statement on the medical management of PH in Sri Lanka, marking an important milestone in the development of PH care across the country.
It was a joint collaborative effort between PVRI membership of the Sri Lanka College of Cardiology, the Sri Lanka College of Pulmonology, and experts from UK — presented during the Sri Lanka College of Cardiology Annual Academic Sessions 2026. The initiative reflects the growing commitment of clinicians, researchers and healthcare leaders in Sri Lanka and beyond to improving the diagnosis, management and long-term care of people living with PH in the country.
Alongside the publication of the statement, the Sri Lanka Task Force has led a series of important advances, including a highly successful live right heart catheterisation workshop and educational sessions on PH diagnosis and management. They are also engaged in discussions with health ministry officials about establishing a dedicated PH service in Sri Lanka with advanced heart and lung failure; as well as transplant services under a national framework. Five centres across the country - Jaffna, Galle, Kandy and Colombo are collecting PH data and collaborating through dedicated PH clinics for the first time.
We believe these developments represent significant progress towards creating a sustainable framework for PH care, education and research within the country.
