- Your Role As a Mentee
Your role as a mentee
As a mentee, your role is active, practical, and fully supported throughout the programme. You’ll work closely with your mentor to review real manuscripts, receive structured feedback, and build confidence in your critical appraisal skills.
Active manuscript review & learning
- Receive and review: Receive manuscripts from your mentor (shared via the Editorial Office) and conduct a thorough, critical assessment as if you were the sole reviewer
- Draft assessment: Independently write a first-draft peer review of the assigned manuscript, following journal guidelines and focusing on the novelty, methodology, significance, and clarity of the work
- Self-reflection: Clearly document any uncertainties or specific areas in your draft review where you require clarification or further guidance from your mentor
Engagement & feedback
- Attend meetings: Actively participate in all scheduled check-in meetings with your mentor to discuss your draft review, the publishing process, and any broader career or journal related queries you might have
- Apply feedback: Carefully consider the feedback provided by your mentor on your draft assessment. Use this guidance to refine your critical analysis, improve and structure your review
Commitment to quality and ethics
- Refine and co-author: Work collaboratively with your mentor to finalise the review, ensuring the final submission is professional, constructive, and of the highest quality
- Uphold ethics: Learn and adhere to the importance of confidentiality, objectivity, and ethical considerations (e.g. conflict of interest) in peer review and scholarly publishing
What you'll gain
Hands-on training in peer review — a critical component of any successful research career and a key expectation for future editorial roles
One-to-one guidance from senior researchers and editorial leaders with extensive experience in PH research, clinical trials, and academic publishing
You’ll gain direct insight from mentors including Anna Hemnes, Sandeep Sahay, and Vinicio de Jesus Perez, whose combined expertise spans basic science, clinical research, editorial leadership, and global collaboration in PH
A clearer understanding of how journals work, what editors look for, and how to deliver constructive, high-quality reviews
Direct connections within the PVRI community and exposure to senior researchers actively shaping the PH research landscape
Formal, mentored experience in peer review that strengthens your CV and demonstrates your commitment to scholarly excellence
Time commitment
The pilot programme runs for approximately 12 months and you’ll be expected to commit to:
- Minimum manuscript commitment: Commit to conducting a first-draft review for a minimum of two to three manuscripts over the 12-month period
- Preparation time: Allocate dedicated time to thoroughly read, assess, and draft the review for each manuscript, typically requiring more time than an experienced reviewer
- Meeting time: Be prepared to attend and actively contribute to the approximately 1-2 hours per manuscript dedicated to feedback and discussion with your mentor
This level of commitment ensures meaningful learning and professional growth.
